Tourism has the potential to negatively impact the environment, but it also generates economic growth and jobs. That means in order to keep the region’s economy thriving we need to make sure our businesses operates in a way that can improve the sustainability of our place.
Tourism in the Bay of Plenty is committed to a sustainable future. Many businesses are working to ensure that our place is one to enjoy for future generations.
Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort's journey started with the Bay of Plenty Sustainable Tourism Charter in late 2006 and implemented in early 2007, we were on board from the beginning a one of the pilot businesses. The Sustainable Tourism Project aims to reduce environmental and social impacts while remaining economically viable.
We then set about putting together an action plan for the coming 12 months. This meant that we had to take an 'opportunites for improvement' document and commit to achieving a certain number of these 'opportunities'.
In doing this, a lot of research has been undertaken and trials compelted. it is very important to bear in mind that the Sustainable Tourism Project aims to reduce environmental and social impacts whilst still remainng economically viable. Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort has also found that to do this, a bit of Kiwi ingenuity goes a long way!
What we have come out with is an Action Plan which is continually updated and added to for our 'opportunities for improvement' and to work towards a common goal of ensuring our business is sustainable in every way. In order to achieve our 'opportunities for improvements' we have formed a Sustainable Tourism Committee with members of staff from all departments working together.
