Boys Education Class & Papamoa Beach TOP 10  updated June 2012

Boys today are being left behind at school and this has been identified by a number of schools in New Zealand who are developing what’s called “Boys Education Classes”. The boys that are in these classes have been identified as needing a different and more practical approach to learning. These boys get nominated by parents and teachers who feel the boy would be more successful at school by being involved in this class and in a different learning environment. Papamoa’s Te Akau Ki School has developed their own “Boys Education Class” for 10 and 11 year olds and this is where we come in...

Rebecca Crosby (General Manager of Papamoa Beach TOP 10) has recently developed a program along with a teacher friend of hers from Te Akau Ki to host his “Boys Education Class” once a week to teach boys in this class general life-skills.
Our part in this is that we spend up to 2 hours every Thursday with these boys teaching them everything from how to mow lawns, paint, carpentry, make beds/do laundry, cook on a BBQ, change a car tyre/oil/water to surf casting, fire safety, surf safety, how to pitch a tent and environmental sustainability and lots, lots more!

At school, the boys then have their normal subjects and curriculum but they are able to use practical examples from their lessons with us at the Resort and directly relate it to the theory aspect, in turn providing a more practical learning environment for them.

Rebecca and the staff at Papamoa Beach TOP 10 take these sessions and we are now getting some of the community who are experts in certain areas to donate their time for certain sessions as well.

So far, we are nearing the end of our first term with the class and it has been a great success. This term has been mostly focused on outside practical work with our Grounds staff and coming up next term we have a mixture of inside chores, painting skills, vehicle safety and basic car maintenance.

The aim of this program with Papamoa Beach TOP 10’s involvement is to teach the boys basic practical life-skills that can be related to the subjects that they are doing in class, like maths, science, English and research projects. We are already hearing reports from the class of how this is helping the boys. The local parents have been really pleased with the program as the boys are coming home and showing off some of their new skills! One father was particularly pleased when his son took interest in helping Dad with mowing the lawns on the weekend.

Over 300 Holiday Parks nationwide took up the Breast Cancer Research Trust’s $1,000 Challenge in 2010/2011
to join the fight to find a cure for breast cancer by 2018.

With each Holiday Park aiming to raise at least $1,000, HAPNZ  hoped to reach over $300,000 to assist in the funding of critical research.

The cut off date for this challenge was the 20th June 2011.

Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort are excited to announce that we raised way over our initial goal.
We raised $3, 034.80! The total raised by HAPNZ for this charity was $474, 323.00!

Many thanks for your support in this challenge.

The Great Holiday Park Auction

Holiday Parks across New Zealand have recently launched this new challenge. HAPNZ has chosen the Breast Cancer Research Trust to be their charity of choice again in 2011/2012 to help find the cure for breast cancer by 2018.

Once again over 300 Holiday Parks nationwide will participate in The Great Holiday Park Auction with each park donating an item or service which will be auctioned off. The money raised will assist in the funding of critical research.

To kick off the auction Jenny from Turangi Holiday Park and Lisa from Martinborough Holiday Park went to particular lengths to raise money for the Trust. Both ladies pledged to shave off all their hair, to be auctioned off at the HAPNZ annual conference held in Wellington on 7th July 2011. They raised $21,482.00 an outstanding effort! The overall amount raised at the conference was $27,482.00.

In 2010 over 6.4 million guest nights were spent in Holiday Parks, and they will invite these guests to join the fight and help meet the target.

Enviro Gold Award for Papamoa Beach Top 10!

Since Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort achieved the Qualmark New Zealand 5 Star Holiday Park rating in October 2009, they have followed it up with obtaining an official Qualmark Green Enviro-Rating where they have achieved Gold status -the highest ranking available under the system.

Qualmark is New Zealand tourism’s official quality accreditation programme. The launch of Qualmark Green enviro-ratings last year made Qualmark the world’s first fully-integrated environmental and quality accreditation programme for tourism.

The five key assessment areas for the Qualmark Green enviro-ratings are energy efficiency, waste reduction, water management, and involvement in conservation and community activities. Operators must provide evidence that they have processes and programmes in place to monitor and improve performance across these areas. The rankings are on top of the set of minimum requirements for responsible tourism operations that form part of every Qualmark quality assessment.

Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort started their journey in sustainability with the Bay of Plenty Sustainable Tourism Project in 2006, which focused on the four key areas of Environmental, Social, Cultural and Economical sustainability and then identified key areas in the Resorts business and operations that could be improved, and some key areas where they were already doing well.

From there, Papamoa Beach Top 10 implemented a Sustainable Tourism Committee within their staff to ensure that they followed their key goals and reported achievements. A list of these commitments & achievements is continually kept up to date and monitered.   As part of the Qualmark rating process the Resort was advised to apply for an Enviro Silver rating.   The application was submitted, along with photographic evidence and statistical data, to Qualmark NZ who scored it under their system and it was passed onto the Green Tourism Business Scheme in the UK for external review.   The application impressed both parties and resulted in the Resort being awarded an Enviro Gold rating.

Qualmark have recently used the Resorts’ Sustainability document as their first case study on their website for other businesses to view.

The result was extremely pleasing to Papamoa Beach Top 10 manager Rebecca Crosby and her staff “We’ve put a lot of hard work into achieving our sustainability goals and it’s great to be recognised for our efforts.” She says “Sustainability will be an on-going focus for us here at the Resort as we value the principles of sustainability highly.  Being 3rd generation in this business I am very aware of the present issues surrounding sustainability and am keen to ensure that our goals are upheld within the four key sustainability areas so that Papamoa Beach Top 10 can continue our commitment to a sustainable future by reducing our environmental and social impacts while remaining economically viable”

Papamoa Beach Top 10 has been owned and operated by Bruce and Donna Crosby for 23 years. In that time, they have developed a loyal clientele with many families returning to the resort for holidays year after year.

The Resort stretches along coastal Papamoa and boasts 35 accommodation units ranging from cabins to beachfront villas with panoramic seaviews, as well as 260 camping sites for the perfect beachfront escape at any time of the year.

Located close to Papamoa Shopping Plaza and Fashion island, the Resort's impressive facilities include covered barbecue area, pentanque, mini tennis court, 2 jumping pillows, wireless Internet as well as immaculately presented amenity blocks.

The Resort truly deserves its 5 Star Qualmark rating and Enviro Gold Award.

5 Star Holiday Park rating for Papamoa Resort

Papamoa Beach TOP 10 Holiday Resort has achieved the Qualmark New Zealand 5 Star Holiday Park rating, acknowledging its status as one of the country's leading providers of beachfront holiday accommodation.

The Qualmark rating is viewed by the resort's owners as confirmation their facilities and services are first class.

“We have always strived to achieve the highest of standards and provide our guests with the best holiday experience possible,” says Papamoa Beach TOP 10 proprietor, Bruce Crosby.

“After sitting at the top end of a 4½ star Holiday Park rating for the past two years, it's satisfying to know the resort now has a 5 Star rating.”

Bruce says the resort's management and staff have always strived to exceed guests' expectations and provide 5 star service and accommodation.

As New Zealand tourism's official star rating system, Qualmark is a solid indicator of quality assurance. Qualmark New Zealand is a Government and private sector partnership between Tourism New Zealand and New Zealand Automobile Association. It licenses tourism businesses to help international and domestic travellers select places to stay, things to do and ways to get around.

Stars are obtained by having an annual assessment by a Qualmark assessor who looks at all aspects of a business and grades them accordingly. There are more than 400 quality checks covering everything from facilities, cleanliness and safety to customer service, business operations, systems and procedures.

In Papamoa Beach TOP 10's case, the most recent assessment took 5-6hrs while the assessor was taken through every aspect of the enterprise.

As part of the 5 star Holiday Park rating, the resort received the Qualmark Green status in recognition of its initiatives in energy, waste, water, conservation and community – all hallmarks of responsible tourism. Along with other top performing Qualmark Green businesses, the resort can now display Enviro logos on its websites and in brochures and other promotional material.

Papamoa Beach TOP 10 Administration Manager, Rebecca Crosby, says the resort's management is mindful of the fact that a 5 star rating comes with high expectations of customers.

“We are continually investing in the resort and have a very clear plan for the years ahead,” says Rebecca. “These plans include a swimming pool, further landscaping and a continuing ambitious building and refurbishment programme.”

Papamoa Beach TOP 10 has been owned and operated by Bruce and Donna Crosby for more than 20 years. In that time, they have developed a loyal clientèle with many families returning to the resort for holidays year after year.

Located close to Papamoa Shopping Plaza and Fashion Island, the resort's impressive facilities include a covered barbecue area and private spa pool; petanque and mini tennis court, wireless Internet and car wash as well as immaculately presented amenity blocks.
